Charleston, South Carolina: Where Southern History Meets Coastal Heat

waterfront beauty, Lowcountry cuisine & HISTORY GALORE

If there’s a city that blends timeless Southern charm with breezy coastal energy, it’s Charleston, South Carolina. Walking through its cobblestone streets feels like stepping inside a watercolor painting—palmetto trees swaying overhead, pastel homes glowing in the sun, and the scent of authentic Lowcountry cuisine drifting from every corner. Whether you’re visiting for the food, the history, or the waterfront views, Charleston welcomes you with its warm hospitality the moment you arrive.

The Food Scene: Come Hungry, Leave Glowing

Charleston’s world‑renowned food scene is a paradise for anyone who appreciates bold flavors and Southern comfort.

Start with @snobchs – Slightly North of Broad, a staple in Charleston’s fine dining world. The gumbo is rich, soulful, and unforgettable—easily one of the best bites in the entire city.

For incredible harbor views without the high price tag, @cdrestaurant is a must. Fresh seafood, coastal breezes, and front‑row scenery make it ideal for travelers who love dining with a view.

Craving a sunset cocktail? Head to The Rooftop at @thevendue, one of the most popular rooftop bars in Charleston. It’s the perfect place to unwind after exploring downtown. Beer lovers should add @revelrybrewing to their list—this local brewery captures the city’s creative spirit in every pint. And for a laid‑back beach‑day option, @islandcabanachs keeps you shaded, cool, and fully in vacation mode.

The Classics: What Every Visitor Should See

Some spots in Charleston have earned their “must‑see” status.

Rainbow Row, with its pastel mansions and historic charm, is one of the most photographed areas in the South. It captures the essence of historic downtown Charleston in a single stroll.

Nearby, the iconic Pineapple Fountain symbolizes hospitality and offers a breezy waterfront escape. Explore the adjacent piers, parks, and winding streets to experience some of Charleston’s best walking areas.

Emelie’s Must-Dos: The Experiences That Stay With You

These are the Charleston experiences that leave a lasting imprint—and they’re essential for anyone wanting to dive deeper into the city’s history and culture.

The International African American Museum is one of the city’s newest and most meaningful cultural spaces. Its location at Gadsden’s Wharf holds deep historical significance, and the exhibits offer a moving, immersive experience.

History lovers should make their way to The Charleston Museum, the oldest museum in the United States, offering rare insight into Lowcountry history.

For a different view of the city, take any water excursion. Charleston harbor tours provide unmatched skyline views and a breezy break from downtown.

If your visit includes a weekend, stop by the Charleston Farmers Market, regularly ranked the top farmers market in the U.S. Come hungry and ready to browse.

One of the most memorable stops on my trip was Boone Hall Plantation. Beyond its breathtaking but haunting grounds, the highlight was a tour led by a Gullah descendant whose singing still echoes in my bones—an unforgettable encounter with Gullah Geechee culture.

This was my first trip to a plantation, and I was stunned at how easily guests were able to separate the horrendous experiences of slavery that happened, exactly where we were standing, from the natural and man-made charm of the location itself. It was really obvious to me how North I was raised and removed I have been from Southern culture, landmarks and experiences in my upbringing. To be so desensitized to those horrors that stay with millions of black Americans generation after generation and so on is truly terrifying. Knowing that Blakey Lively and Ryan Renolds chose this exact planation, with a row of “slave quarters” buildings standing directly in front of the mansion, instead of any other location in the world is dumbfounding. This piece of the experience is a great example of how travel and interacting with other cultures encourages education and empathy. At least, I hope.

Where to Stay: Hotels > Airbnbs (Trust Me)

While Charleston has some charming short‑term rentals, I recommend opting for a hotel for consistency, safety, and overall experience.

If you’re ready to indulge, French Quarter Inn offers an unforgettable luxury stay. The Charleston Place, once named one of the best hotels in the world, remains a top choice for travelers seeking refined comfort.

For something central and more budget-friendly, Hyatt House Charleston is dependable, modern, and walkable. Or save even more by staying across the bridge in Mount Pleasant at Cambria, one of the most affordable options without sacrificing convenience.

Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or planning a coastal getaway, Charleston, South Carolina promises history, flavor, beauty, and charm wrapped into every moment. Come for the stories, stay for the shoreline, and return for the magic that lingers long after you’ve gone home.
